Description
Here’s my classic homemade sausage gravy recipe, also known as “sawmill gravy,” which requires just 4 ingredients and can be made in about 15 minutes, making it a perfect breakfast staple to enjoy alongside my 5-star foolproof biscuits!
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb (455 g) pork breakfast sausage (sage-flavored recommended)
- ¼ cup (31 g) all-purpose flour
- 2 ½ cups (590 ml) whole milk
- ⅛ teaspoon crushed red pepper (optional)
- Salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Place 1 lb (455 g) of pork breakfast sausage in a skillet over medium/high heat.
- While cooking the sausage, use a spatula or wooden spoon to break it up and crumble it until it is completely browned with no pink remaining, without draining the skillet.
- Sprinkle ¼ cup (31 g) of all-purpose flour evenly over the sausage crumbles and stir frequently until the flour is absorbed, which should take about 1 minute.
- Slowly drizzle 2 ½ cups of whole milk into your skillet while stirring, and add crushed red pepper if desired.
- Continue cooking and stirring frequently until the mixture thickens and reaches your desired consistency.
- Serve warm over homemade biscuits, adding salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste!
Notes
- You can make sausage gravy the night before and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator, then reheat it in a skillet over medium/low heat, adding a splash of milk to stir in as it thickens.
